Planes arrive for Thunder over Louisville

You’ve probably heard several planes for Thunder over Louisville fly over your home already. At the Kentucky Air National Guard, aircraft are continuing to fly in. All the planes for Thunder have to arrive by 5 p.m. Friday, but many are coming in Thursday.

It’s going to be a jam-packed show with a lot of action in the air. This year’s air show will include more than 60 civilian and military planes, aerobatics teams, sky diving groups, and breathtaking stunts. You’ll also see the United States Air Force, Navy, Army, and Marines all represented.

Louisville event to close S. Indiana bridges

Crossing the Ohio River could be a challenge for Indiana motorists this weekend. The Indiana Department of Transportation says the Thunder Over Louisville festival will force the closure of Interstate 65 in Jeffersonville on Saturday night. It says southbound traffic will be routed from I-265 toward New Albany and I-64.

All access ramps to southbound I-65 that are between I-265 and the Kennedy Bridge will be closed. These ramps will re-open to southbound traffic only after a fireworks show is over and the roadways are safe. INDOT says the event also will close the U.S. 31 Clark Memorial Bridge from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until 2 p.m. Sunday. That includes all day Friday and Saturday.

Louisville business recognized by National Retail Federation

The Root Cellar in Old Louisville is the only business in Kentucky to make it to the top 20 of the “Retail Means Jobs” video competition by the National Retail Federation. The store sells farm fresh produce, meats and cheeses all from local farmers.

“They are trying to plant, to harvest and it’s just a lot of work for them to go tend to the markets,” owner Ron Smith said. “So I thought, why not open a retail store where they can bring their products, still farm fresh, and I just sell it for them.”

Louisville Orchestra to hire replacement musicians

Louisville Orchestra Inc. will begin hiring musicians this month to replace those who have been enmeshed in contentious negotiations with the organization for nearly a year, orchestra CEO Robert Birman said Thursday.

“We declared that negotiations were over a long time ago’” Birman said. “If the players want to make a proposal, they have that option, but we are at an impasse.” Birman said orchestra management will start hiring musicians in April and May, “and the goal would be to have an orchestra by September.”

Louisville effort to crack down on vacant houses

A huge effort is still underway in Louisville to crack down on vacant houses. Leaders took part in the Louisville Vacant, Abandoned and Underutilized Property Summit Wednesday. It’s part of an ongoing effort to take control of abandoned houses that officials say is an out-of-control problem.

Much of the crowd was hostile over the issue, with Metro Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton saying, “I think the community is pretty frustrated — not being maintained, eyesores, bring property value down. So we need to get ahold of it, get maintenance, investment — new housing on these properties.”

There’s not much of a case here for Louisville having better talent than Kentucky. Nor is there much of a case for the Cardinals being better coached. Rick Pitino is good, really good, but then, so is Kentucky’s John Calipari.

Both of them, actually, are extraordinary coaches. They have each taken three schools to the Final Four, though two of Calipari’s trips ( Massachusetts and Memphis) were vacated because of NCAA rules violations .

Residents send message with blue jeans

Many Louisville residents traded their dress clothes for denim today, but they aren’t just taking a casual day. They’re sending a message to fight back against sexual assault.

The event started in 1999 when an Italian court overturned a rape conviction. In that case, justices said the victim’s jeans were so tight that she must have cooperated. A new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sexual assaults are growing in the U.S., with more than one in four women and one in nine men experiencing sexual assault in their lifetimes.

One of the most hyped movies hits theaters Thursday night, likely bringing with it a new level of fame for its Louisville-born headliner.Jennifer Lawrence stars in “The Hunger Games,” based on Suzanne Collins’ popular series.Lawrence’s former theater teacher, Charlie Sexton, spoke to WLKY about her rise to fame. Sexton is the artistic director at Walden Theatre.The 21-year-old Lawrence is hitting the big screen playing a character nicknamed “The Girl On Fire.”And if advanced ticket sales are any indication, Lawrence is about to get a lot hotter. She’ll soon be known to millions of fans as Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of “The Hunger Games.”But once upon a time, Lawrence walked into Walden Theatre as a young teen with an all-too-common dream.”She was a pretty intuitive actress, and she did command a lot of focus on the stage. And she did sort of have a natural instinct for drawing focus, which is something that you don’t really — you can teach it but it takes a long time,” said Sexton.Lawrence spent two semesters with Walden, and played Desdemona in a scene from Othello at the theater’s Shakespeare Showcase in 2006.”What I remember about her was she was really determined. I remember her saying, and she was 14, going on 15 years old, and she said, ‘I’m going to go to New York.’ And I thought, ‘Well that’s good, you know, I’ll see you when you get back.’ And she’s like, ‘I’m not coming back. I’m going to make it big,’” said Sexton.
